[ubuntu] PC will not boot up properly

Hi, spent yesterday and this morning on this... I am running Ubuntu 9.10.
My PC starts to boot up gets to the white ubuntu symbol and starts to run the disk check... it gets to 70% then stops. I have got a screen up now that says the following (I copied it)

That is what it says... I have crashed the pc several times by holding the on button on and it starts up again and freezes up. Prior to this I had a little problem of the PC sometimes freezing... the mouse arrow stopped moving... after about 5 mins and I had to crash it (nothing else worked)

Does anyone recognise the above and have a suggestion of how to fix it? I was so smug when 9.10 ran perfectly on my PC...

[kubuntu] cant install virtual package libcupsys2

I was installing software for my printer when faced a problem

libcupsys2 is needed by printer drivers

$sudo apt-get install libcupsys2

sais that package is virtual (Its Russia so im not sure that 'virtual' is correct translation in this situation) and satisfied by libcups2 or 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1 and i should point which one to use but it doesnt say how. Also libcups2 is already installed.

Please advice something.

With a clean install of 9.10 64bit server, my wireless card seems to be installed successfully. iwconfig gives:

"iwlist ra0 scan" works fine also. Therefore, I setup /etc/network/interfaces as follows:

When I do /etc/init.d/networking restart the following is displayed:

Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :

This adds the interface to ifconfig, but does not set up the essid, so I can't access the network. Yet when I manually type:

iwconfig ra0 essid

The card connects to the network and I get internet access.

Why does this not work when configured automatically with the interfaces file? Any ideas?

[mythbuntu] Strange VDPAU / Composite Problem with mythfrontend on 9.10

Hello Community,

I updated my hardy (was 7.10) to karmic through adept two weeks ago.

Worked really well, only had problems with the nvidia driver and lirc (since no more /dev/input/by-path/pci*event-ir for my hauppauge nova-s).
the kernel doesn't create /dev/input/by-path/pci*event-ir for my hauppauge anymore. changing my existing udev rule and changing /lirc/hardware.conf helped (SUBSYSTEMS=="input", ATTRS{name}=="cx88 IR (Hauppauge Nova-S-Plus ", SYMLINK+="input/hauppauge_nova_s").

But i somehow messed up the nvidia driver /libvdpau install.

I had the cool avenard repo activated with hardy.
Something went wrong through the update and i re-enabled the repo, now everything works EXCEPT:

video playback

1) mplayer with vdpau plays only audio but no video "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device."

2) mythtv plays fine...although it is transparent/has no background color. while transparency can be fun this is not since the underlying windows shine through. (screenshot attached)

workarounds for this:

a) deactivate composite

b) in compiz -> rules for windows set noargb visuals for mythtv = heavy tearing

c) start mythtv with a black background window

3) vdpauinfo (attached) says everything is fine

i tried (re-/un)installing different combinations of libvdpau/nvidia-glx without making it better (no problem to make it worse,tho). i had to delete /lib/*vdpau* as suggested somewhere on nvnews.com to even make it install at first.

can someone point me in the right direction?

Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0ghz
Zotac Geforce 9800GT Eco

Ubuntu 9.10 amd64
nvidia-glx 195.22

maybe this helps some poor soul having trouble with the nvidia-driver:

i had an /etc/modprobe.d/lrm-video that i had to manually delete to succesfully get the nvidia driver loaded at reboots/reinstalls.

[ubuntu] Booting Vista after installing Ubuntu 9.10

(I know this isn't a Windows 101 forum, but I am trying to migrate my grown-up baby to Ubuntu via a dual-boot with Vista, and have messed up the Vista, so any help appreciated).

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inpsiron 1501 in order to dual boot with an existing Windows Vista. Ubuntu can access all the files on the Vista partition, but Vista does not boot (not that I care, but the owner of the laptop does).

The reason for the boot failure is that I deleted partition 1 (Dell diagnostics) and partition 2 (Dell recovery), then shrunk and moved Vista over to give me 20 GB for Linux. Obviously I deleted the MBR and the boot list on whichever partition was the boot partition - which would not be a problem in any other version of Windows because I could edit BOOT.INI, but not in Windows Vista.

Initially selecting Windows Vista in Grub caused a hardware restart. I used a Vista recovery disk in the hope that it would recreate Boot/BCD (the binary file replacing BOOT.INI). Now Vista makes an effort to boot, but I get errors like "RunDLL.exe not found", and an infinite disk-read. It seems to be reading the correct partition but something is missing.

Any ideas on how to repair the Vista boot process? (without destroying a completely functional Ubuntu).

hello,
symptoms: after upgrading to 9.10 from 9.4 my laptop enters into an endless loop with error message "unable to enumerate usb on port 1"

before i would get this message too but it just showed it for about 4-5 times, stop buggering and actually boot

anyways the usb port 1 is physically damaged, it's simply not there. but this endless loop didn't happen at my previous ubuntu so i didn't mind the few error messages at the boot

so i'd like to ask if there is some file where could i manually edit the settings where it says which usb devices do i have, or which to check and which to skip. i would simply want to remove the port 1 from my system completely

by the way
i have read this thread and my symptoms are exactly the same as jimbo99 described later. it simply enters this endless loop and if i try to boot with nousb option it still keeps checking for it or something, the HDD flickers and the screen refreshes everytimes it goes in the loop and i can't type anything, only when i stroke some key at the time it "flickers"

oh and i wasn't sure which prefix should i pick for the thread, so i just picked ubuntu, but this most probably affects more systems

So, I tried running epsxe from terminal and got this back.

how do I fix this?

[ubuntu] Compiz doesn't want me to use more Desktops

HI everybody.
I use Compiz+Emeralds. When the program was not installed or i deactivate it i can have all the dektop i want. Compiz instead seems to reduce my desktops to 2. It gets more funny wheni open the Compiz manager and try to change the number of desktops: there it says that i have only 1 desktop, and does not let me change the number :S
How is this? Is there a way to fix it?

[ubuntu] UBUNTU firewall does not has Application control

Hi to every one.

the Firestarter in UBUNTU does has provision for opening or closing the ports for inbound and outbound connections.

However it lacks features such as Application control which are found in windows firewall and third party firewall for windows.

-when such feature will be available in UBUNTU firewall, As we can see more people( mainly Home user not the corporate desktop deployment) will move to UBUNTU in near future.

[ubuntu] Panic - Recover HDD - Data

I need help getting my ubuntu to boot properly. I dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 8.09. My pc was locked away for a year and i got it out yesterday, hooked up to the net and started Ubuntu upgrade. I use Intel 2600 based MB with an ATI 2400 XT grapics card. It worked fine until i installed drivers for my new LG Flatron W2254 LCD monitor. I think something went wrong between LG drivers & ATI software which was already installed on the system. My PC started rebooting itself. My upgrade stopped, in ternet stopped working as well and i saw an error message DPKG not working?? i then tried logging in the recovery mode. it went through what seem like a fix but still no luck. when i boot now in Ubuntu, i get the login screen in a small area of my monitorm, almost like looking at a 17' view. i put in my login name and password but nothing happens just blank screen?? help please!!!!

Hi All,

I have and old desktop with Pentium III 667 MHz, 512 MB RAM and 20GB Quantum Fireball HDD.

Originally it had Ubuntu 8.10 for a year and some weeks ago completely reinstalled to 9.04. Everything was fine.

1) Since 2 days when I try to boot both the normal and safe mode freezes before getting to the login screen. In normal mode the Ubuntu screen w/ the progress-bar appears and immediately freezes.

2) Memtest86 (v2.11) is over w/ "Pass complete, no errors"

3) After running Memtest86 for 1-2 hours tried booting in safe mode and fortunately it worked. Ran dpkg and fsck successfully.

So now my system is up but I don't have any know-how to investigate the logfiles etc...

Any idea is highly appreciated what can cause this boot hang, what to check / run.

[ubuntu] USB IAD LAN Modem not detected

Greetings to all.

I have one Siemens C2110 broadband Modem which I connects to my machine through USB cable:(. because RJ- 45 lan connector for this Modem is Loose ,causing you to drop connections frequently.

the problem is when i boot from Live CD this modem is not detected, Nor a Unknown device present, or some messegae stating that one device is not working , appears.

as a result i am not able to browse net.

- how to install driver for this .This modem uses Conexant viking driver for windows.

The device ID for this LAN Modem in Windows device Manager is USB\VID_0915&PID_005&REV_0014
USB\VID_0915&PID_005.

clicking on driver update in Ubuntu also does not finds this device.

Help.

[ubuntu] Grub 2 problem

Hello,

After do some updates of Ubuntu, ubuntu appears 2 times in mij grub loader. I have a dualboot with windows7 so the order and amount of boot options is important.

How can I fix this? Because I have just 1 ubuntu on my laptop but the grub loader show 4 ( 2 both with recovery mode).

I have already tried :

- Editing list.cfg but there is nothing in this file
- update grub, but then he find again 2 ubuntu's.
