For me, that started after I installed the "restricted codecs" package to play the media things.
So I reformatted, and from now on I'm sticking to my old method of just installing them manually...

Have you looked at all the other "no sound" threads? There are a couple of mega ones.
Yeah, honestly your only solution is to grab a Vista disc and start the Recovery process, because you messed up a boot file somehow.
Maybe type "alsamixer -c0" into the Terminal, and check the volume levels of everything?
So it works, but we have to plug something into the headphone port, and pull it out to have the speakers start working?
Congrats on making it work. Have you typed "alsamixer -c0" into the Terminal? Maybe something is low in volume there. For what it's worth, no sound comes out of Ubuntu until you're at around 70%, and...
