    I had a similar problem with my Asus Vivobook (Intel HDA PCH, Realtek ALC233).
    As suggested elsewhere, what eventually worked for me was separating the L/R channel levels for recording in the alsa...

    I encountered the same problem after updating a few days ago on my Ubuntu 10.04 system, however my 'problem kernel' was 2.6.32-24-386.

    I booted another kernel from my grub menu...
