Allways unmount drive by right-clicking on the drive's desktop icon and then 'unmount volume'.
Restart your machine with drive plugged-in. If that doesn't work, we'll fix it another way.
Did you try changing default video output plugin in System/Preferences/Multimedia Systems Selector?

You can use any partition editor to format USB drive. Gparted can do the job just fine. If you want USB flash drive to be visible on any Win machine, use FAT or NTFS filesystem.

fajerpeter, I saw your post just now and this was the solution. However, problem was my RAM. RAM failed at one point and messed things up. Not just Compiz, but a lot of things went bad. It's all OK...
