I've found a way to reproduce the bug.
CASE 1:
+ start/reboot your computer
+ enable the touchpad in GDM login screen using Fn+F7
+ put your credentials and log into Gnome
The touchpad should...
I've just tried the above workaround, but it doesn't work.
The strange thing is that until GDM the touchpad works.
EDIT:
Trying to go back to GDM (using "switch from"), enabling the touchpad...
Another question: 32 bit or 64 bit?
I have the 64 bit version.
I have the 8600M GT video card.
Did you install the proprietary drivers? Just to understand which are the differences between our configurations.

I don't have the same issues 8600M GT, but I can confirm that the proprietary drivers break different things, including:
+ framebuffer full resolution (tty1-6 fell back to 640x480);
+ restore...
I've reinstalled my system from Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04 and I have various problem.
