    [solved]Radeon drivers install on karmic (fglrx fo not works)

    Hi all, I used to use fglrx drivers, but they do not work anymore since i Upgraded to karmic (X do not start, I have a blinking login prompt), so I manage to use radeon drivers (for a mobility FireGL v5200 (IBM T60P Laptop), but I got errors:

    Pardon my ignorance, but have you already tried the radeon drivers instead?
    I looked in the manual man 4 radeon. But I don´t see hints, that it would be supported.

    Please log in to the console and provide us with information on /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    Debugging Glx is the next step, but first, let´s just find out why the Xserver crashes even on 2D.
    You may want to backup+delete/rename your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The actual xorg should recognize all necessary things and the radeon driver will hopefully have sufficient 3d-support.

    Then for 3D mode, we should check, if all necessary libraries are still there - mesa will be necessary, as far as I remember - please search the forum for it, I am no expert on this.

    Please also check for kernel framebuffer drivers are loaded: lsmod | grep radeon

    what is with all the ATI cards not working in Karmic?

    i have a radeon x1600, it stopped working too.

    I suppose it´s a similar thing as with the intel graphics in the recent past.
    The xorg-server has been equipped with new interfaces and the kernel interfaces (Kernel based modesetting) themselves have been renewed too. Some graphic card drivers use the old UXA-interface, some have the new EXA interface. Some are equipped with DRI, some use DRI2 If you update a system you probably have old configuration files too.
    There are a lot of combinations of options and some of the drivers are aging.

    For an english language explanation, please do a search on amd nvidia intel uxa exa problems, kbm or similar.

    My proposal would be, to backup old configuration data and let ubuntu handle the settings itself. If that fails too, man xorg.conf, read hints an man references to the other drivers.
    If possible, use the open drivers, not the proprietary ones. If you have an intel vga you will get a stable system with karmic. If you have another card, please consult the forum, before upgrading.

    Ok, but I never changed anything exotic on Xorg, how should I do to let ubuntu configure my Xorg for radeon driver with compiz support ?

    libgl-mesa-dri was missing, installed it and fixed the XGL problem ! Thanks guys

    That´s the only error, I could find at first sight - but it will most definitely deactivate your 3d capabilities. 2D seems to work according to the log, but it seems to be "hidden" in your case.

    + DRI2 seems to be enabled, so you could try to deactivate the old DRI
    OR
    + install missing libraries - I suppose some libmesa/glx is not installed or was removed during the update.

    See aptitude on the console for packages called libmesa*. candidates may be
    libgl1-mesa-dri or

    according to
    http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?se...armic&arch=any

    this is the one you need.
    If it does not help try

    libgl1-mesa-glx

    and also check for
    libdrm-radeon1

    at your own risk.

    Also try to create a new user for testing purposes - a fresh user account with default settings often helps you tracking some errors.

    I have a Sony Vaio with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 AGP. I am a novice having only just upgraded to KK from JJ which was my first installation. JJ worked very nicely. Booted in about 65 seconds to a usable desktop and wireless detected. The postings here seem to deal with the problems I'm having but the level of knowledge is much higher and I don't get a lot that's said.

    Here's what I do to get on my computer now (It used to be eeeasy):

    push power button
    see logo
    video mess for 2 secs.
    window says, "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode"
    I hit "okay"
    window says, "What do you want to do?" gives 4 choices
    I hit "cancel" because all of the choices don't work
    Now black screen with terminal asking for login and password
    I fill them in
    I'm logged in and I hit 'esc' and the screen goes to the normal Ubuntu login screen and I'm off and running a slower than familiar version of Ubuntu compared to last week...
    What a hassle.

    I went to ATI and downloaded:
    ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.runrunning. and the .pdf instructions. I don't know enough to follow them.

    If anyone can explain what to do or refer me as to where to go it would be appreciated. JJ ran nicely and I thought KK would be an improvement but so far it isn't. Is the console the same as the terminal?

    I want to keep using Linux!
