Re: Radeon drivers install on karmic (fglrx fo not works)

I went to ATI and downloaded:
    ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run
That driver is too old to use with Karmic, and newer ones don't support your GPU. Make sure you purge any traces of old ATI drivers and reinstall the default opne-source drivers: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troublesho...from%20scratch

Re: Radeon drivers install on karmic (fglrx fo not works)

that was the last one that I tried, and my screen came out so garbled that I just said screw it, and am now reloading my OS from scratch, while I am on here with a live session.
I'm going nuts, all of this worked fine in ultimate 1.4, just went back to windows because I couldnt get full function out of my sound card (creative audigy 2 ZS platinum with the external box and IR remote) I wanted to give ubuntu a second go round, so I downloaded the newest Ultimate, 2.3 (I believe this is based on 9.4) I haven't tried messing with the sound yet, because if I screw that up, I can most likely fix it without a reboot, but I know I'll be mad if I get that working, and have to reinstall because of video

Re: Radeon drivers install on karmic (fglrx fo not works)

Upgraded to Karmic today and xorg can'r use my radeon 4350 graphics card.
ssh'd in and changed xorg.conf to use vesa and this works.

Have tried installing the ati driver (ati-driver-installer-9-11-x86.x86_64.run). This is the driver the ati web site points you to.
Have also tried letting ubuntu install the ati/amd proprietary fglrx graphics driver from 'hardware drivers'.
    Neither works.

I've removed all the nvidia packages I could find.

Here's the log when fglrx was in xorg.conf:

Running with the vesa driver is OK for most things & I don't care than compiz doesn't work, but I use qemu/kvm and this screws the entire display up.
    Anyone have any ideas, please?

Cool Re: Radeon drivers install on karmic (fglrx fo not works)

This new change imposed in Ubuntu 9.10 had only provide me problems.

    1) This is pushing people to buy new hardware (Microsoft tactics with they new OS).

    2) Even do the version is an even number (stable), the new Ubuntu is completely unstable, using the users to be beta testes against their will (Microsoft tactic again)

    3) Right now, I'm reinstalling six computers with Ubuntu 9.04 from customers that accepted my advise to change to Ubuntu. Making me look like an @$$, to the point that my other customers are going to change to XP again (even do Microsoft say to stop supporting it soon).

    4) I will never buy again an computer or laptop with an ATI Video card again in my life. I'm tired of the same bull over and over again with this company.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU UBUNTU COMMUNITY?

Why I can't install flgrx sucessfully even if you stop "supporting it"?

You made a good step with the graphic change but then you made two step back with the bugs and the issue with the ATI

Red Hat was doing the same bull and that is why I changed to Ubuntu. How many times I have to change of distributions?

Re: Radeon drivers install on karmic (fglrx fo not works)

The problem isn't as much the Ubuntu community as it is the hardware manufacturer. In this case, ATI is responsible for not supporting F/OSS as well as they could be.

I, too, have issues as I would very much love to play Steam (HL, CS, DoD) games as well as WoW on my ATI x600xt card. However, that apparently will not happen without either: downgrading, or waiting a very long time for the open drivers to fully support 3D rendering on my card.

If anybody has a solution to the above, let now know! Until then I've learned to only support those companies that support your own choices (nVidia from now on).

If you keep up with development efforts and git branches, ATI is supporting F/OSS very well. They finally have an in-kernel memory manager, and just recently, they cleared the last major hurdle (GLSL) for OpenGL 2.x support in the r600/r700 mesa driver.

I would have to say that ATI is not keeping up with par! My current laptop is the first and last I will ever own with ATI graphics cards. I have the ATI Radeon HD 3100 graphics card, and it has been absolutely nothing but trouble with Linux. I have installed about 6 or 7 distro's looking for answers, and absolutely none of them works with it! It over heats and over heats, continually runs hot. If I wasn't a Linux guy, I would have gone back to Windows by now, however my disdain for them is very strong. ATI should be able to put out drivers for their own product (even proprietary drivers) and they are not. I think it was x.9.9 version that I installed and it didn't work at all of their proprietary driver. I have started keeping the old ones as a fall back, because even their new ones have been unreliable. I have installed proprietary drivers on most of those distros I have installed to, after giving the first install a go for a while. Really sad. So my only option is to believe that ATI is not keeping up like it should, and I'm absolutely through with their products, and would steer anyone away from them!

Your opinion of ATI is based off their terrible proprietary driver, while ATI is concentrating their development efforts on the F/OSS drivers. A lot of progress has been made recently there, but unfotunately, most end-users won't see it until much later when it shows up in distros, unless they go hunting for later drivers.

If you're willling to try open-source drivers, a useful option might be
    Option "ForceLowPowerMode" "boolean"
Enable a static low power mode. This can help reduce heat and increase battery life by reducing power usage at the expense of performance. The default is off.

If you have the link for the F/OSS drivers by all means post it. I'm certainly not limiting myself to the proprietary drivers. They do have a steady stream of them coming out, unfortunately they are not usable. I'm currently running F/OSS driver, and cannot do any labor intense processes, even watching a video will overheat it. Last night I was tinkering with it some more and installed the proprietary drivers, and they were worse, ran about 98 degrees C where as the F/OSS drivers (in the 9.10 normal repos) runs at about 88 degrees C. Neither is acceptable IMHO. That is only surfing the web, not really anything else. Oh, and it is impossible to run the laptop without some sort of lifting board, laptop thing. If it is set on the table it will overheat very quickly. Fans are running and vents are clear, it is a driver thing.

    Where do I set this?

I disagree with you. Well, in part. I think it's a combination of something missing or needing to be added. Development of the required code stalled somewhere.

Why do I think that? Because I have 3D working with the open source ati driver in Mandriva 2010 and Fedora 12. I've tried different distros because I was curious whether the experience would be the same. I cannot boot Ubuntu 9.10 and use the desktop normally. Starting/clicking Firefox results in a locked laptop system. Firefox doesn't even start. The cursor 'wheel' stops spinning and everything freezes.

There are variations of this sort of problem scattered across the forum and very similar reports on Launchpad. There is no xorg.conf file with the latest 9.10 Karmic so you have to edit your own file and add some content to avoid the crash. I've tried but to no avail. I bought a newer, bigger laptop disk drive so I wanted to install a recently released distro. I'm familiar with Kubuntu and Ubuntu on my desktop but I'm going to abandon the *buntus for now so I'll install something else on my laptop. This is not a slight or anything. I've experimented quite a bit trying to solve this issue as I would gladly post a solution and wanted to. Unfortunately, I could not discover it. I have a few more things to try before I finally give up.

I just think that there is some code missing that maybe both ATI and Ubuntu left out or maybe Ubuntu didn't grab what was needed and put it in the release. Newer ATI hardware might work okay with the open source driver. I'm not sure but older cards such as 9550 and older seem to result in crashes. Well, for my hardware, it does.

Anyway, just my two cents for what it is worth. I think if you have older ATI hardware such as 9700 and older, try the open source driver first without any configuration. If 3D effects being enabled results in a crash, then you have to edit xorg.conf and if you're like me, you need to read and research what should go there.
